Welding and cutting is a two-year program designed to train graduates for full time employment at entry level upon satisfactory completion. Welders permanently join metal parts by applying heat or pressure to the metal pieces to be joined, melting the parts and fusing them to form a permanent bond. The training is oriented to the metal required, and is based on national qualification standards and specifications by the AWS (American Welding Society). The areas of instruction are oxy-fuel welding and cutting, shielded metal arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, welding ferrous and nonferrous metals, reading welding symbols, blueprints, and metal fabrication. Students have the oppertunity for the A.W.S Certification. Duties range from assisting in the fabrication of new equipment for industry and private sector to repairing old equipment. The work setting might be a small shop or a major industry.
