child care

Instructor:  Beth Felts
Support Staff: Amanda Blunk, Candace Schofield

This program is designed for students pursuing a career where they will work with babies, toddlers, or preschoolers. Early Childhood Education is a two year program with 6 credits earned each year. Students will learn how to apply principles and skills best suited for the young child. Students will spend time in the classroom and the labs to experience child care services in both a daycare, and Pre-School settings. Suggested prerequisites are Interpersonal Relations and Nutrition & Food Preparation.

Early Childhood Education 1 (2-3 periods, 2 semesters)
Students get to experience working with students in child care for at least 1-2 periods per day.  They will also learn about lesson planning, child development, guidance, and health & safety topics in the classroom. Students act as workers and teachers fo the child care, taking care of children that range in age from 6 weeks to pre-K.  This course is eligible for dual credit through Ivy Tech Community College.

Early Childhood Education 2 (2-3 periods, 2 semesters)
Students revisit topics from the first year from a more in-depth standpoint, engage in the Child Development Associate (CDA) process, and learn what it takes to create their own daycare. In addition to working in the child care lab, students have the opportunity to visit and volunteer in a special needs preschool once a week. Students may be able to receive their CDA credential and/or Professional Certificate at the end of their second year.

Early Childhood Education 3 (Work Based Learning/ Internship opportunities)
Third year students have the chance to work in a preschool or daycare setting, either as a volunteer or paid worker for a portion of their school day.
